Summary

Non-SF story。 Short。 Set in the 50s。 Imagine, say Peyton Place with the characters going off on metaphysical tangents。At first I thought I had never read this, but as I got into it, it began to seem slightly familiar, so I may have read it decades ago。PKD's taut, deadpan narration highlights the passionate actions of his characters。 This is a style you don't see much nowadays that I think was a thing back then ("Just the facts, ma'am")。 Non-SF story。 Short。 Set in the 50s。 Imagine, say Peyton Place with the characters going off on metaphysical tangents。At first I thought I had never read this, but as I got into it, it began to seem slightly familiar, so I may have read it decades ago。PKD's taut, deadpan narration highlights the passionate actions of his characters。 This is a style you don't see much nowadays that I think was a thing back then ("Just the facts, ma'am")。 。。。more

Another very dark realist novel。 Throughout these novels runs a theme of individuals trapped and grasping, without steadfast feelings, but carried away within intense feelings。 These characters appear trapped in Skinner boxes, but always ready to deploy grandiose self narratives

Could not finish。 The story was boring and pointless。 After the graphic domestic violence, I was out。

Early PKD, this again shows his skill as an observer of social change and the tensions in the air。 Jim Briskin (the name was reused in the later sci-fi stories) is a radio announcer who is cool and gets on with the wild outsider kids, who include a paranoid loon with a radio-controlled car and some sci-fi mag aficioandos。 Pynchon and Vonnegut fans should take a look。

Unusual Dick novel。 Well written, mostly a drama with a short scifi story in it。 Most of the characters seemed to be mildly insane until the end。

Almost a 4 star book。 Even though it is not one of the best PKD books, it's still better than most contemporary fiction。 The book is primarily about an indecisive, aimless, and conflicted person named Pat。 She is looking for something but doesn't quite know what it is。 In the course of finding her way, she makes some head-scratching decisions, but seems to figure it out at the end。 Of course, there are other characters and themes, but the majority of the book is about Pat。 For fans of PKD sci-fi Almost a 4 star book。 Even though it is not one of the best PKD books, it's still better than most contemporary fiction。 The book is primarily about an indecisive, aimless, and conflicted person named Pat。 She is looking for something but doesn't quite know what it is。 In the course of finding her way, she makes some head-scratching decisions, but seems to figure it out at the end。 Of course, there are other characters and themes, but the majority of the book is about Pat。 For fans of PKD sci-fi (which I wholeheartedly am) there is a 500-word sci-fi short story embedded in the book "written" by one of the characters。 It's not much but it brought a smile to my face。 。。。more

。。。more

PKD has written some supremely weird books, and this may just be one of the weirdest。 And it's not even science fiction。 Highly idiosyncratic and enjoyable。 PKD has written some supremely weird books, and this may just be one of the weirdest。 And it's not even science fiction。 Highly idiosyncratic and enjoyable。 。。。more

One of PKD's non-scifi novels。This one follows two couples, as their lives become intertwined。 It's about on par for his non-scifi, which if you're looking for, at least start with Confessions of a Crap Artist。 One of PKD's non-scifi novels。This one follows two couples, as their lives become intertwined。 It's about on par for his non-scifi, which if you're looking for, at least start with Confessions of a Crap Artist。 。。。more

I read this after reading Martian Time Slip for a couple of reasons。 It was in the sci-fi section with Martian Time Slip [Lord knows why, after reading it] and I was in the mood to try reading some of his 'stuff' again。 This book was published posthumously, so I can only assume it was to cash in on his 'name' and his fame; overall, it was a lousy book and I can see why it was never published。 There was no real plot to the story; it seemed quite aimless as a result, as if the author had a destina I read this after reading Martian Time Slip for a couple of reasons。 It was in the sci-fi section with Martian Time Slip [Lord knows why, after reading it] and I was in the mood to try reading some of his 'stuff' again。 This book was published posthumously, so I can only assume it was to cash in on his 'name' and his fame; overall, it was a lousy book and I can see why it was never published。 There was no real plot to the story; it seemed quite aimless as a result, as if the author had a destination in mind but did not quite know how to get there。As bad as it was, it did have some interesting discussions between the different characters。I think the best line of the book was about how Elvis would soon be forgotten and never remembered again。 It was hilarious, considering how he is still essentially 'worshiped' today。It was just a 'bizarre' story about a set of exes and a young couple recently married who go through a weird series of interactions before the 'status quo' returns。 There is the pipe-dream of a twenty-seven year old woman seducing an eighteen year old husband [all the time never deciding if the male is to be seen as a son, lover, boy, man-child, husband, or partner] and the woman's ex "falling in love" with the husband's even younger wife。 Of course, the tables eventually turn violent on the woman and she falls even harder for the boy until reality finally sets in。 It is a weirdly depressing story that has very little good going for it。 Is there anything good that could be said to be going for the story? (view spoiler)[In the end, Jim and Pat reunite in marriage, and Rachael takes Art back and the young couple make their marriage work。 (hide spoiler)] You have to wade through a lot of drivel to reach the pot of fool's gold at the end of this rainbow。 The ending is a bit off-the-cuff as well (view spoiler)[in that Jim and Art end up at the hospital awaiting the birth of Art and Rachael's baby。 Why would Jim be present when it is not even his baby? Perhaps it is because he is helping out financially? I do not know (hide spoiler)]。I have already said more than I intended about this story。 On the one hand, it strongly reminded me of A Confederacy of Dunces in places。 On the other hand, this book is 'better' that that garbage。 It is an odd book, because it left me with so many mixed emotions inside; the overriding emotion, though, was disappointment with this book。 。。。more

Really liked it but the ending kind of petered out。 There was a bubble, and the title was broken bubble, so you knew that was going to happen。 But who did it happen to happen to? Love the setting of 1950s San Francisco。 The character of Jim Briskin was obvious ego projection of Philip Kindred Dick。 He works as a DJ at a radio station, and his ex wife Patricia works there, too。 She is an alcoholic, and Jim is still in love with her。 She is engaged to one of the suits, a sales manager or something Really liked it but the ending kind of petered out。 There was a bubble, and the title was broken bubble, so you knew that was going to happen。 But who did it happen to happen to? Love the setting of 1950s San Francisco。 The character of Jim Briskin was obvious ego projection of Philip Kindred Dick。 He works as a DJ at a radio station, and his ex wife Patricia works there, too。 She is an alcoholic, and Jim is still in love with her。 She is engaged to one of the suits, a sales manager or something。 A used car salesman called Looney Luke buys a lot of ads, but Jim can't bear to read them and gets suspended for a month。 Meanwhile Jim meets a young couple, married but still teenagers。 They are fans of his radio show and invite him to dinner。 He makes the egregious error of bringing Pat along。 She seduces the young husband。 A side story is that Art, the young husband, is in a nerd gang that hangs around a reclusive draft dodger named Grimmelman。 They have a radio controlled car called the Horch that they used to wreak havoc with acts of vandalism mostly aimed at the Bactrians, a group of wealthy kids who torment and look down on the nerds。 They are a younger version of frat boys。 Also, there is a stripper named Thisbe Holt whose act is climbing into a large plastic bubble sans culottes and allowing an increasingly frustrated optometrist's convention to roll her around in it。 Knowing that the title of the book is The Broken Bubble, you see trouble on the horizon。 But this is where the book starts to drag and go downhill。 There is a really long and dull conversation where Jim Briskin tries to explain why he would rather remarry his ex-wife Pat than run off with the young and pregnant Racheal。 This is kind of where PKD wants to not have his cake and not eat it, too。 He indulges in the fantasy of having the young woman want to marry him but he is just too noble。 Fine, but meanwhile we have to read this long and tedious passage。 Enough! The bubble breaks, Grimmelman takes off for one last manned flight in the Horch, and all of this could have culminated in one big chaotic climax, but instead we get anti-climax。 I still liked this book and enjoyed it right up until a little before the end。 When I write my book and I cut to the chase, it won't be a wild goose chase。 That's for sure。 。。。more

A library book。 So far, not so good, though I have enjoyed Philip Dick's writing in the past。* * * * *I didn't like this book at all。 It was published posthumously, perhaps because Dick wasn't satisfied with the quality。 No sci-fi here, just a dumbo story of a young and an old couple with a weird relationship and several characters and events that go nowhere and add nothing to the story。 A library book。 So far, not so good, though I have enjoyed Philip Dick's writing in the past。* * * * *I didn't like this book at all。 It was published posthumously, perhaps because Dick wasn't satisfied with the quality。 No sci-fi here, just a dumbo story of a young and an old couple with a weird relationship and several characters and events that go nowhere and add nothing to the story。 。。。more

I listened to this as an audio book。 It is one of the rare cases where I just was not able to concentrate on the story。 It is extremely rare that this happens to me, and it's the first time with a Dick novel。 As I was only able to grasp bits and pieces of information about the plot, I'll end the review here。 It was at the time rejected for publication, and only published posthumously。 This shows。 You will be well advised to avoid this Dick entry。 I listened to this as an audio book。 It is one of the rare cases where I just was not able to concentrate on the story。 It is extremely rare that this happens to me, and it's the first time with a Dick novel。 As I was only able to grasp bits and pieces of information about the plot, I'll end the review here。 It was at the time rejected for publication, and only published posthumously。 This shows。 You will be well advised to avoid this Dick entry。 。。。more

I listened to this on audiobook。 I'm not sure I've ever yelled at characters more out loud than I did while listening to this book。 Incredibly time-bound。 Female characters are infantilized and condescended to by nearly every male character and, I would argue, by the writer as well。I hated the book, and if Philip K。 Dick weren't already dead I'd take a piss on his shoes the next time I saw him in person。 I listened to this on audiobook。 I'm not sure I've ever yelled at characters more out loud than I did while listening to this book。 Incredibly time-bound。 Female characters are infantilized and condescended to by nearly every male character and, I would argue, by the writer as well。I hated the book, and if Philip K。 Dick weren't already dead I'd take a piss on his shoes the next time I saw him in person。 。。。more

Dick couldn't get the book published when he wrote it, the story finally saw a public release after his death。 It's easy to see why it took 30 years for the the book to be published。 The story is competent, just, but really not very interesting。 Just meanders, without any clear objective nor any real conclusion。 Just not very interesting。 Dick couldn't get the book published when he wrote it, the story finally saw a public release after his death。 It's easy to see why it took 30 years for the the book to be published。 The story is competent, just, but really not very interesting。 Just meanders, without any clear objective nor any real conclusion。 Just not very interesting。 。。。more

Philip K。 Dick mined certain parts of his life for material over and over, so if you read a lot of his work, you start to recognize familiar characters and elements。 The Broken Bubble has less of that than most。 The teenage couple Art and Rachel are probably based on PKD and his first wife (Dick was first married at age 20), but that's a part of his life he didn't refer to much in his other books。 The marriage breakup/adultery plot is fairly routine for this type of fiction, but the bizarre subp Philip K。 Dick mined certain parts of his life for material over and over, so if you read a lot of his work, you start to recognize familiar characters and elements。 The Broken Bubble has less of that than most。 The teenage couple Art and Rachel are probably based on PKD and his first wife (Dick was first married at age 20), but that's a part of his life he didn't refer to much in his other books。 The marriage breakup/adultery plot is fairly routine for this type of fiction, but the bizarre subplots give a sidelong glimpse into California, circa 1956。 It feels like a world on the cusp of the changes that the 1960's would bring。 。。。more
